woot!
That Pop-Tarts Sushi was just an amuse-bouche compared to this monster. The BK Whopper Bar has been chugging along outside of Times Square this month, and though they haven't started selling beer yet, they're getting ready to unveil a burger entirely inspired by New York. Doesn't that make you feel special? Vice President of Global Product Marketing and Innovation John Schaufelberger explained to us that the BK Whopper Bar is somewhat of an "innovation lab" for the company—a place where they can test sandwiches like the "Meat Beast" on omnivorous New Yorkers before they ship them out to the rest of the country.
The bar sells only variations on the classic Whopper, like the Bourbon Whopper (with onion rings and bourbon-flavored sauce), the California Whopper (swiss cheese and guacamole) and the BK Black & Bleu Steakhouse XT (cajun sauce, bleu cheese, bacon). Their signature dish is the Meat Beast, a stomach-challenging pile of beef, bacon, pepperoni and cheese that can be customized with up to 20 different toppings. Where's the side of Cheesy Blasters?
After stopping by the 24-hour bar for breakfast this morning, we were sent away with the next sandwich "on the horizon"—the NY Pizza Burger. Created by Chef J. Sullivan, it's a shareable pie of four beef patties, mozzarella, marinara sauce and "Tuscan Herb" mayo on an oversized sesame bun. And to our surprise, it wasn't bad! The concoction wound up tasting more like a meatball sub than either a burger or a pizza, and was much lighter than a combination of those ingredients sounds. Though upon reaching the end of her slice, intern Briana said it started to get "kind of sickening." Maybe next time we won't do the taste test at 9:30 in the morning.
